Begin inside

Did you know that issues within your home, specifically your attic, are often the first sign that something may be wrong with your roof? Before you take a look at your home's exterior, check out your attic. We recommend bringing a flashlight so you can get a good view of everything that's going on up there.

While you're in the attic, and before you turn on your flashlight, take note of whether you see any light coming through cracks or holes in your roof. If you do spot any, it's a sure sign that you'll need to repair or replace your roof as soon as possible. If light can get through your roof, so can water and other damaging elements.

After you've thoroughly inspected your attic for any sources of light, we recommend using your flashlight to check for dark streaks or stains throughout your attic. If you see either of these on the underside of your roof or running down the walls, your roof is likely leaking and the water is probably damaging both your roof and your home's interior.

If your roof is leaking, it's probable that you will begin to see sagging in areas. If you do notice a sagging spot, tap it with a broom or lightly prod at it. If the spot feels soft, wet, or bends easily, you have moisture damage that needs to be taken care of immediately.

In addition to dark spots and sagging areas, keep an eye out for leaks and water damage as well. These signs will be fairly obvious and easy to spot. If you do notice any water damage or leakage, contact Cambridge Exteriors for a roof inspection right away!

Perform an exterior check

After you've thoroughly inspected the interior of your property, it's time to take a look at the outside. Interior checks help you identify damage that has already occurred, but exterior checks may help you catch things before they cause costly damage to your home.

We recommend that you perform roof checks regularly to ensure that you catch any potential issues before they cause serious damage. However, roof inspections are dangerous, which is why it's always a wise idea to hire an experienced professional who has the tools and knowledge necessary to safely and accurately identify any noticeable signs of damage.

Below are some important signs to look for that can determine whether or not you need a roof replacement.

In asphalt and wooden roofs, rotting is quite common. Signs of rotting can include rotten, broken, or missing tiles, as well as moldy buildup on tiles.

While moss and algae is not necessarily a sign that you need a whole new roof, it can be unsightly. That's why we recommend checking for it regularly so you can catch it early, making it easier to remove. If possible, we recommend using a garden hose to remove these pesky eyesores.

Shingle granules are made from crushed stone and minerals and they help protect your asphalt roof, as well as add an aesthetic factor. A common sign of roof damage or aging is shingle granules that begin to fall off. Commonly, you'll notice granules or shingles in the gutter, which makes your roof more susceptible to water damage and decay.

Your roof valley is where two parts of your roof that are sloped come together. It's one of the most common areas for damage because snow and rain tend to flow through them.

While we'd all love to think our roofs will last forever, that's just not the case. Depending on the type of material used on your roof, some may last longer than others, but each type certainly has a lifespan. Typically, if your roof is more than 20 years old, we recommend considering a replacement.

If you've recently moved into an older home and don't know when your roof was installed, we recommend keeping an eye out for when your neighbors opt for roof replacements.

It's possible that the roofing contractor that installed your roof did a poor job and left your home vulnerable to damage and other issues. Watch out for things such as patches, tiles, or shingles that fit together poorly. Additionally, keep an eye out for multiple layers of shingles on your roof, which means that corners were cut on your previous roof installation.

What to do if you end up needing a roof replacement?

If you've conducted a thorough inspection of your attic or roof and have noticed some of these signs, you may be wondering what your next step is. Now's the time to do your research and find a reputable roofing contractor and schedule your free estimate!
